The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) is the world's largest humanitarian organization, working to save lives and combat hunger globally. In Yemen, one of the world's most severe humanitarian crises continues to drive widespread food insecurity and vulnerability. According to the 2026 Humanitarian Needs and Response Plan (HNRP), an estimated 22.3 million people require humanitarian assistance, including 18.3 million people in need of food security and livelihood support. WFP's response focuses on saving lives, protecting livelihoods, and improving food consumption among the most vulnerable populations through life-saving food assistance and nutrition interventions. To support evidence-based programming and strategic decision-making, WFP Yemen's Vulnerability Analysis and Mapping (VAM) unit leads food security monitoring, assessments, and analysis across the country. The unit conducts large-scale food security and livelihood assessments, market monitoring, beneficiary monitoring, and other analytical activities that generate critical information on food security conditions, market trends, household vulnerabilities, and humanitarian needs. These efforts provide the evidence base for Programme design, targeting, operational planning, donor engagement, resource mobilization, and advocacy. The VAM unit manages and analyzes a wide range of datasets and produces regular analytical products, including monthly food security updates, quarterly food security and market monitoring and market functionality assessments. Through rigorous data collection, analysis, and reporting, the unit plays a central role in informing WFP's response and supporting humanitarian decision-making across Yemen.

The VAM Officer (Statistician) will support the design, implementation, and analysis of food security assessments and surveys by applying sound statistical methodologies and ensuring the quality, accuracy, and reliability of data collected by WFP Yemen. The position is responsible for conducting statistical analyses and modeling, developing sampling methodologies, managing survey datasets, and producing evidence-based findings to inform food security monitoring, Programme implementation, and humanitarian response. The incumbent will contribute to questionnaire design, sample selection, data cleaning, validation, weighting, and quantitative/qualitative analysis of food security, market, and beneficiary datasets. The role will support the preparation of analytical reports, statistical tables, dashboards, and other information products while ensuring adherence to WFP standards and best practices in survey design, data quality assurance, and statistical reporting. Unique terrestrial and marine ecosystems, including globally significant island biodiversity, extensive coral reefs, diverse highland agro-ecosystems, and culturally important dryland forests, provide essential services that underpin livelihoods, food security, water systems, and cultural identity across the country.

Yet Yemen faces a complex set of environmental and development challenges. Institutional capacity constraints, limited environmental monitoring, and pressures on public resources have affected the management of natural ecosystems.

Yemen’s ability to address biodiversity threats is severely hindered by prolonged conflict, economic collapse, and weak governance, which have eroded enforcement capacity and drained resources for environmental management. Fragmented institutions limited technical expertise, and insufficient scientific data further constrain effective planning and monitoring. High community dependence on natural resources for livelihoods, combined with security challenges in some areas, exacerbates habitat degradation, while low public awareness limits grassroots engagement in conservation.

The Global Environment Facility (GEF) Small Grants Programme (SGP) is implemented by UNDP on behalf of the GEF Partnership. UNDP oversees the Small Grants Programme (SGP) through the Vertical Hub and the Nature Hub of Bureau for Policy and Programme Support (BPPS). Funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF), the Small Grants Programme efficiently channels direct grants to non-governmental and community-based organizations to help them cope with climate change; conserve biodiversity; protect international waters; reduce the impact of Persistent Organic Pollutants; and prevent land degradation. Helping communities with their initiatives for sustainable livelihoods while generating global environmental benefits is the core inspiration of the Small Grants Programme.

Launched in 1992 as a corporate programme of the GEF, the GEF Small Grants Programme (GEF SGP) has supported local action for over thirty years to address global environmental concerns. SGP aims to deliver global environmental benefits in the GEF focal areas of biodiversity conservation, climate change mitigation, protection of international waters, prevention of land degradation, and elimination of persistent organic pollutants through community-based approaches. To date, SGP has funded over 29,000 community-based projects covering more than 120 countries. It has gained considerable experiences at the community level, including adapting to climate change while addressing issues of the GEF focal areas.
