Language Specialist (English, Arabic ,Tigrinya ,Oromo)
What we do
The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) works worldwide to provide protection and humanitarian assistance to people affected by conflict and armed violence. We take action in response to emergencies and, at the same time, promote respect for international humanitarian law. We are an independent and neutral organization, and our mandate stems essentially from the Geneva Conventions of 1949. We work closely with National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and with their International Federation in order to ensure a concerted, rational and rapid humanitarian response to the needs of the victims of armed conflict or any other situation of internal violence. We direct and coordinate the international activities conducted in these situations.
Purpose
The Language Specialist 1 helps the ICRC communicate clearly and consistently with patients in ATH by providing translation services from one or more languages into their mother tongue and/or editing services in their mother tongue.
Accountabilities & Functional responsibilities
- Provides translation work of various types in Al Talh Hospital level, accompanying medical doctors, medical assistants, nurses, and other medical or protection staff during their daily work in the hospital.
- Provides simultaneous translation and interpretation during ward rounds, medical interventions, meetings as required
- Provides simultaneous translation and interpretation for the surgical team inside the Operating Theatre
- Acts as a cultural mediator between the hospital staff, patients and international colleagues
- Regularly familiarizes and updates him/herself on local and regional context, particularly in relation to ICRC activities and other relevant information.
- Translation of key messages, health education messages, where required.

Relationships
- Internally, interacts with hospital staff and ICRC Clinical, Administration and Protection teams who request language services.
Certifications / Education required
- University degree in translation or professional language skills from a recognized academic institution or equivalent experience in interpretation/translation.
- Fluency in Working knowledge of one or more of the following languages: Tigrinya/Oromo in addition to English and Arabic.
- Excellent writing skills in their mother tongue
- IT proficiency
Professional Experience required
- 3–5 years’ experience in translation (preferably in an international organization)
