PROGRAM/DEPARTMENT SUMMARY:

The Civil Engineer works within the Field Department of Implementation Support structure, committed to providing reliable and complete support to facilitate the field activities to achieve efficient service to program beneficiaries.

GENERAL JOB SUMMARY:

A Civil Engineer within the rehabilitation project is part of the site management team and acts as day-to-day manager on a construction site, which can include liaising with third party stakeholders and managing the site facilities.

Civil Engineers are also responsible for planning, technical queries, marking out and leveling construction sites before any work takes place as well as checking drawings, quantities and ensuring calculations are accurate.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: 

  • Organizes materials and ensuring sites are safe and clean.
  • Estimating the damages in the beneficiaries' homes, following up and setting up bills of quantities for restoration.
  • ensuring appropriate materials and tools are available.
  • Follow up the work and submit daily reports on the percentage of completion.
  • Provides technical advice and suggestions for improvement on particular projects.
  • Diagnoses and troubleshooting equipment as required.
  • Negotiates with suppliers and vendors to ensure the best contracts.
  • Authorizes technical drawings and engineering plans.
  • Draws up work schedules and communicates with beneficiaries.
  • Gathering data, compiling reports and delivering presentations to relevant stakeholders.
  • Delegates tasks and scheduling meetings and training sessions where required.
  • Completes quality assurance and providing feedback to the team.
  • Liaises with the local authority to ensure compliance with local construction regulations and by-laws.
  • Supervises site security, health and safety.
  • Provides technical advice and solving problems on sites.
  • Ensures project packages meet agreed specifications, budgets and/or timescales.
  • Planning and Setting out sites arrangements.
  • Conduct himself/herself both professionally and personally in such a manner as to bring credit to SHS and to not jeopardize its humanitarian mission.
  • Other duties as assigned.

ACCOUNTABILITY:

REPORTS DIRECTLY TO: Project Officer

WORKS DIRECTLY WITH: IM/Reporting Officer, Data Entry, Community mobilizers, M&E team

KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE: 

  • A degree in a relevant such as civil or structural engineering, or another related subject like construction.
  • Minimum 1-year experience in the construction field 
  • Teamworking and relationship-building skills.
  • Technical skills
  • Leadership and management.
  • Excellent ability to use Excel 
  • Good English skills both written and oral
  • Strong analytical skills
  • Ability to make BOQs
