Mehad mission

Mehad is a French and international health and solidarity NGO established in 2011 by a group of doctors to address the urgent healthcare needs of populations affected by the war in Syria and neighboring countries. In 2022, Mehad expanded to Ukraine in response to the Ukraine war. Recently, Mehad has included Palestine and Yemen in its areas of intervention.

In early 2024, Mehad conducted an exploratory mission to southern Yemen to assess the humanitarian situation, particularly the health system's needs and potential contributions to strengthening it. Based on the findings of this mission, Mehad will move from assessment to implementation by supporting a health project in Abyan Governorate, as a first project. This project aims to enhance the resilience and stability of the people in northern Abyan by improving their access to quality healthcare services. Mehad aims to develop new activities in the future according to medical needs assessment, in collaboration with MoPIC and MoH. 

Position summary

Perform professional oral and written translation activities, from english to arabic or vice versa, and delegated duties depending on supervisor’s specialization and instructions and according to Mehad protocols, standards and procedures, to ensure a proper representation and translation of Mehad activities and core values.  

Role and Responsibilities

• Performing professional oral and written interpretation and translation of medical trainings providing to Health Facilities staff (Doctors, nurses, etc.)
• Performing professional written and oral interpretation and translation activities according to supervisor’s specialisation (e.g. MD, RN, IC, Pharmacy, Mental Health, Lab, Logistics, Operations, HR etc.), ensuring confidentiality, neutrality and respect towards patients, collaborators, trainees, authorities, military factions and Mehad staff.
• Performing administrative tasks required by supervisor (arrangement of meetings, minute taking, etc.). Providing necessary feedback to supervisor following discussions and negotiations. Assisting with report writing, ensuring that all meeting minutes are recorded and that translated documents are properly filed.
• Ensure neutrality and accuracy when translating. Ensure confidentiality of all translation is maintained as directed by the Mission/Project coordination team.
• Ensuring that supervisor is aware of cultural nuances when dealing with authorities and counterparts to ensure a good working relationship. Educating supervisor on effective methods of culturally sensitive communication and informing international staff about local customs, tradition, etc. that will help in better communication and understanding of the context.

Qualifications, experience and skills :

I.    Academic background

[Required]    Higher education (health degree would be an asset)
[Required]    Professional training in translating
[Preferred]    Medical background is desirable

II.    Professional/Practical Experience

[Required]    Previous working experience in relevant and similar jobs
[Required]    Experience in written and oral translations and performing administrative tasks
[Preferred]    Experience working with INGOs is desirable 

III.    Skills and attitudes

• Main workplace is in Aden 
• Regular visits to the projects on various governorates (Abyan, etc.)

V.    Others

Languages: Ability to read, write and communicate professionally in English is mandatory, 
Local language is mandatory.
