JOB TITLE: Pharmacist Health and Nutrition Assistant (70%)
LOCATION: Lahj governorates, Yemen
REPORTING TO: Health & Nutrition Officer and Community Health Officer and Health & Nutrition Manager
OVERALL PURPOSE: The role as Pharmacist Health & Nutrition Assistant facilitates and assists Medair in the implementation of essential health and nutrition assistance to vulnerable and conflict affected communities in Yemen.
PROJECT OVERVIEW: To improve access to and quality of essential health and nutrition services to displaced population and acutely vulnerable communities in Yemen, with focus on Lahj governorates.

Responsibilities:
GENERAL TASKS
- Uphold the humanitarian principles of humanity, neutrality, impartiality, and independence
- Respect the Medair values at all times, both within and outside of working hours

- Follow the Medair Security Plan and other related policies and SOPs
- Adhere to Medair Nationally Recruited Staff (NRS) handbook and regulations
- Be prepared to work in Lahj and/or Aden and other Governorates of Yemen
SPECIFIC TASKS
Technical
- Assist the implementation of Yemen Minimum Service Package (MSP), management and supervision of Medair health and nutrition project in Lahj Governorates, in line with national guidelines and meeting Medair standards.
- Conduct regular field trips to health and nutrition facility locations to ensure the quality of the programme, with reports being made, feedback provided, and action identified.
- Support the Health and Nutrition Project Officer with the oversight of all referrals within targeted districts and from district level to Lahj and other locations identified as point of referral within Lahj Governorate Plan and roll out community health worker activities in targeted villages at secondary and tertiary levels
- Oversee the process of data collection, collation and dissemination to meet the requirements and deadlines set by Medair and/or external partners.
- Provide input into the integration of beneficiary participation and accountability in all aspects of the project.
- Establish referral pathways from the communities to the health facilities and to further health and nutritional support.
- Assist health and Nutrition Officer with coordinating closely with respective DHO and GHO departments as required
- Support the Health and Nutrition Officer with any other program related duties as requested and required
- Support the Community Health Officer with roll out of the community health programming in line with MSP in Lahj, including planning of proposed and monitoring of CHVs activities
- Conduct daily supervision and on job training of the CHVs and ensure linkage with targeted health facilities
- Oversee the process of data collection, collation and dissemination to meet the requirements and deadlines set by Medair
- Ensure that screening, case finding and referral is conducted inline MoPHP guidelines
- Coordinate with Community Health Officer to ensure IYCF (infant and young child feeding practices) messages in line with national guidelines are relayed through CHV community work
Stock management at health facilities
- Ensure that transportation and storage of medicines, medical supplies and other supplies complies with good distribution practices (GDP) and Medair drug guidelines
- Ensure that stock cards and other stock documentation is accurate and filed correctly
- Ensure that the medicine store is clean, well-organized and free of pests at all times
- Monitor the temperature and humidity of the health facility store on a regular basis and report any concerns to line manager, submit reports on temperature and humidity
- Ensure the stock in health facilities is stored according to its requirements
- Ensure consumption data is collected, recorded and monitored accurately
- Oversee possible disposal of expired supplies according to national guidelines and keeping the environment safe
Supervision and training
- Train and supervise the stock keeper in health facilities to keep accurate stock records for all medicines and supplies in the facility store
- Train and supervise the stock keeper in a health facility in how to submit weekly stock reports and consumption data, indicating which items are near to expiry and/or minimum stock levels
- Train and supervise the stock keeper in a health facility in reporting any loss or damage of stock and supplies immediately
- Conduct a physical inventory tighter with the stock keeper in a health facility of all stock on a monthly basis
- Report any warehouse maintenance issues
Staff Management
- Ensure the assigned health and nutrition team members receive relevant and appropriate training (CMAM, IMCI and outbreak surveillance as examples) coaching and supervision in order to develop their professional skills, knowledge and understanding. This may be through on-the-job training and/or taught sessions.
- Promote the health, wellbeing and security of the health and nutrition team by ensuring the application of security guidelines, health and safety in the workplace.
Financial Management
- Ensure that any activities requiring the handling of Medair money are carried out in line with Medair procedures and all paperwork is completed accurately and in a timely manner.
- Work with the relevant field managers to plan and manage health and nutrition expenses.
Communication and Coordination
- Represent Medair at relevant local level coordination meetings involving local authorities, communities and other NGOs.
- In coordination with any relevant M&E staff, follow up community concerns and issues raised through feedback or complaint mechanisms.
- Develop and maintain appropriate communication structures with the assigned health and nutrition team, HN Project Manager and HN Manager, and other relevant stakeholders.
- Report any security incidents or concerns to the Security Focal Point in Aden.
Quality management
- Assist in implementation of relevant policies and standards relating to health service delivery including Sphere and CHS standards, Ministry of Public Health and Population and donor guidelines and other good practice.
- Participate as requested in Medair internal workshops and distance learning sessions to keep up with changing trends, new guidelines and best practices.
- Oversee exit interviews and other feedback or assessment mechanisms, and incorporate findings and recommendations into work.
Logistics
- Assist the correct and timely ordering of all necessary medicines, supplies and equipment for the assigned health facilities and activities, ensuring minimum stocks are maintained and items are stored and distributed correctly.

WORK EXPERIENCE

3 years post-qualification medical professional experience in primary health care and nutrition programming
Work experience in stock management and medical supply chain management
Report writing experience
Working knowledge of locally significant outbreak prone diseases
Experience in conducting training for health and nutrition personnel followed by supervision

1 year Management experience in a health/nutrition context for an international NGO
Experience in CMAM program implementation
Training in communication skills and management

WORK CONDITIONS:
Position will be based in the Medair Aden Office initially, until a field base is opened in either Lahj Governorates, with field trips outside the city/town, within Lahj and/or Aden Governorates. The candidate will need to be flexible on time depending on the project needs.
Regular working hours will be 08:00 to 16:30 with 30 minutes for lunch, but may require flexibility as the work dictates.
