JOB TITLE: Research Assistant
LOCATION: Aden, with regular travel to other HALO offices.
REPORTING TO: Research Analyst

MAIN DESCRIPTION

Assist the Research Analyst with data entry, and research for the development and maintenance of research tool to monitor causalities of landmines and UXO in Yemen which will inform HALO Yemen’s operations and donor relations. The aim of the research is to provide a historical and up-to-date understanding of the type, nature and characteristics of explosive remnants of war contamination within Yemen.
 
Key Responsibilities 

The Research Assistant is responsible for:

  • Conduct open-source research on the conflict in Yemen, focusing on identifying areas of EO contamination and infrastructure damage, tracking areas of intense and prolonged fighting, using social media, traditional media and other sources. 
  • Verify the authenticity of open-source information, identifying and discarding mis/dis-information, and geolocate relevant open-source information.
  • Provide assistance in dataset analyzation including data categorization of external datasets
  • Input data into HALO’s internal dataset, including Arabic to English translation, tracking events by categories (eg. Gender, age, EO type)
  • Assist in the maintenance the HALO dataset to ensure accurate and efficient collection and storage across a range of operational data.
  • Support the Research Analyst with additional tasks as needed. 

Role Requirements 

Essential

  • Yemeni Citizen.
  • Excellent spoken and written English.
  • Experience with Excel, and data entry. 
  • Experience conducting open-source research on traditional and social media (eg. WhatsApp and Telegram channels), and other sources. 
  • Excellent analytical skills with meticulous attention to details.
  • Interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively in a team in a culturally diverse environment.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills, creativity in research.
  • Excellent time management skills and ability to multi-task and prioritize work.

Preferable

  • Knowledge of Yemeni news sources tracking conflict, former experience in journalism or political research. 
  • Knowledge and experience in the use of GIS software.
  • Experience in managing large datasets.
