Project objectives:
INTERSOS is implementing a multi-sector project funded by BHA in Taiz governorate, aimed to improve the protective environment, while reducing morbidity and mortality related to poor access to health, nutrition, and WASH services in Yemen, by ensuring conflict and displacement affected individuals have access to quality emergency health and nutrition services, lifesaving protection assistance and quality WASH services.
MAIN RESPONSIBLITIES:
Under the supervision of WASH Expert,
1. Contribute development of WASH assessment tool specially in relation to his specialty on water quality mapping.
2. Contribute for the development of water quality maintenance SOP and a focal person on the review and contextualization of the SOP.
3. Conduct chlorine demand test for the water point and lead bucket chlorination activities during cholera outbreak response wherever applicable.
4. Train community volunteers on water quality testing procedures and ensure the quality of test.
5. Support the local authority on training of their staff, collection, analysis of the water sample, and organize a technical report whenever requested by line manager.
6. Support the WASH expert in select the water points and negotiate with LWSC and GARWASP, also support the engineers when doing the Pumping test for the water points selected.
7. Ensure the availability of consumables and testing kits. Monitor the stock and make timely request to avoid rapture.
8. Document the result and follow up any deterioration in the quality of water in the operational area and liaise with line manager for timely action.
9. In coordination with WASH expert of the project and WASH coordinator of the mission Setup water treatment methods to improve the bacteriological, physical and chemical quality of water to ensure the standard set by WHO/INTERSOS.
10. Assist the WASH expert to make timely action on the factors that could affect/contaminate a water source of the community.
11. Draft/write regular Water Quality report in combination with Data entry.
12. Check if the Hygienists in DTC/ORC do regular FRC monitoring and if they do those following standards.
13. Flexible to accept to fill any gap in the department whenever requested by the line manager
Overall, these tasks require from the Water quality Officer:
- Adherence to Humanitarian principles of Neutrality, Impartiality, Independence and Humanity.
- Excellent communication skills with different population groups (age, gender, social status, etc.)
- Clear & timely communications to line management.
- Very good knowledge of INTERSOS project, abiding by INTERSOS internal rules and guidelines and respect INTERSOS Charter of Value and Code of Ethics
Qualification/level requirements
- Certificate in Public Health, Biochemistry or related technical qualification
- Minimum of two years experience.
- Familiarity with Yemen WASH Cluster Standards and WHO water quality standards.
- Experience in community-based approaches
- Experience in water quality testing, monitoring and reporting is desirable
- Strong organizational skills and able to coordinate and manage a diverse array of activities and stakeholders
- Good knowledge of spoken English desirable
- Report writing skills and computer skills in word processing and Excel.
- Experience in conducting surveys, managing data and statistics is desirable.
