The Yemen Red Crescent Society (YRCS) is the sole neutral, impartial, and independent humanitarian organization in Yemen, with nationwide reach. Established in 1968 in the south and 1970 in the north, merging in 1993, it's recognized by the International Committee of the Red Cross and a member of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement. Its extensive network includes numerous branches, sub-branches, and health centers, supported by hundreds of staff and thousands of active volunteers. Operating in a challenging, conflict-ridden environment, the YRCS provides tireless humanitarian support to Yemenis affected by protracted crises, focusing on strengthening its structure, services, and sustainability to better serve vulnerable communities. The YRCS's mission is to protect human dignity, save lives, and promote the well-being of at-risk people through humanitarian and primary health-care services, community empowerment, and resource mobilization.
Responsibilities
The Communication Coordinator serves as the central point of contact for all communication activities at the headquarters and branches. They are responsible for determining and implementing priorities, objectives, and strategies, as well as directing, planning, monitoring, and evaluating communication activities. They oversee all staff involved in these activities and provide necessary technical support. They contribute to building and implementing a comprehensive approach to communication for the Yemeni Red Crescent.
The Communication Coordinator determines communication strategy and oversees the conception, development, implementation, and evaluation of communication programs, including public and internal communication, community participation, environmental scanning and analysis, print production, capacity building, and humanitarian law promotion. They represent the Yemeni Red Crescent to the public and manage the communication budget.
Relations:
- Internally, they interact with branch management, program managers, and specialized colleagues from other departments, as well as advisors supporting the branches.
- Externally, they engage with media representatives, communication officers from other humanitarian organizations, partners from the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, and civil society representatives.
Scope and Impact:
- Financial Responsibilities: Supervising the communication budget and activities of the communication department.
- Geographical Scope: At the headquarters and branches.
- Staff Under Supervision: 17 employees.
General Tasks:
- Understand the Seven Fundamental Principles of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement and adhere to them.
- Understand the Yemeni Red Crescent's Code of Conduct and adhere to it.
- Understand the roles of components of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement.
- Always represent the Yemeni Red Crescent professionally.
- Perform tasks not included in this job description and provide support to other departments when required
Job Responsibilities and Tasks:
- Determine the strategic direction of Yemeni Red Crescent communications in collaboration with the executive management and other departments and branches (annual planning process).
- Perform representative duties.
- Develop guidelines, frameworks, and programs related to communication, with support from relevant departments at the headquarters and international Red Cross and Red Crescent experts.
- Oversee the implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of communication programs, including operational communication; community participation; humanitarian law promotion; Yemeni Red Crescent network development; joint Red Cross and Red Crescent communications; public communication; digital communication; information analysis; print production; and resource mobilization.
- Support the analysis of developments related to Yemeni Red Crescent humanitarian mandates and their impact on the organization's reputation and capacity to operate.
- Define, in consultation with Yemeni Red Crescent management, the desired overall identity and key messages for the Yemeni Red Crescent, and regularly review its external position regarding humanitarian mandates.
- Support the development of an expanded network of communications for the Yemeni Red Crescent, in line with communication objectives.
- Represent the Yemeni Red Crescent before the public, in line with communication objectives.
- Develop and produce internal and external communication tools and materials, including digital platforms.
- Provide advice to management on internal communication issues as needed.
- Manage all matters related to staff performance, training, and capacity building within the communication team.
- Support training and guidance on communication for staff from other departments and field operational structures as needed.
Management Responsibilities:
- Understand and manage performance and development activities for staff under supervision.
- Provide continuous feedback and support to staff under supervision.
- Organize regular team meetings to ensure optimal coordination and proper information flow.
- Ensure staff under supervision have updated job descriptions, and request feedback and support from the Human Resources department if necessary.
- Plan and coordinate annual leave for staff under supervision to ensure uninterrupted operations and minimize outstanding leave at the end of the year.
- Support and encourage staff under supervision in their personal development through guidance and advice on training and internal and external development opportunities.
Required Education and Experience:
- A bachelor's degree or equivalent in a related field such as communications, political science, international relations, journalism, or law.
- Excellent proficiency in English, both spoken and written, with strong presentation skills in English as well Strong proficiency in Arabic .
- Computer skills (proficiency in MS Office and other software) and familiarity with internet communication tools and social media.
Required Professional Experience:
- Minimum of 6 years of relevant experience in a communications field. At least 2 years in a management role.
- Experience in team and project management.
- Strong experience in public communication.
- Familiarity with international humanitarian law.
