What we do

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) works worldwide to provide protection and humanitarian assistance to people affected by conflict and armed violence. We take action in response to emergencies and, at the same time, promote respect for international humanitarian law. We are an independent and neutral organization, and our mandate stems essentially from the Geneva Conventions of 1949. We work closely with National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and with their International Federation in order to ensure a concerted, rational and rapid humanitarian response to the needs of the victims of armed conflict or any other situation of internal violence. We direct and coordinate the international activities conducted in these situations.

Purpose

Physiotherapist 2 contributes to implement physiotherapy related activities in accordance with the defined strategy. She is a full member of the interdisciplinary hospital and rehabilitation team which ensures patient-centred care within Al Talh Hospital.

Accountabilities & Functional responsibilities

  • Ensures that persons with disabilities are assessed and defined with regard to the population in need of physical rehabilitation, in coordination with the hospital/physical rehabilitation project team and in close collaboration with professional experts (e.g., nurses, surgeons, psychologists, ortho-prosthetists).
  • Helps promote best practices in coordination with the physical rehabilitation team and is actively involved in discussing services regarding complicated/complex cases.
  • Ensures the continuum of care by referring individuals in need of further rehabilitation or vocational/occupational rehabilitation after their discharge to the appropriate structure.
  • Ensures the implementation of ICRC physiotherapy standards in collaboration with the respective partners.
  • Supports physiotherapy staff and ensures sustainable physiotherapy practice. Sets priorities and manages timely provision of physiotherapy services within an interdisciplinary approach. Assesses physiotherapy staff needs and performance, providing regular feedback and ongoing training.
  •  Contributes to delivering training and coaching within her specialty based on ICRC internal guidelines and internationally validated recommendations.
  • Contributes to developing professional relationships; advocates health promotion activities and scholarly practice, so that service users benefit to the utmost from ongoing learning.
  • Participates in Internal meetings and provides reporting about Physiotherapy weekly and monthly activities at Al Talh Hospital.

Scope & Impact

  • Remit: local, hospital or physical rehabilitation center or other ICRC supported structures (e.g. places of detention).
  • Contributes to financial monitoring of the costs involved in the project and activities supported (the Physical Rehabilitation Project Manager or Hospital Project
  • Manager bears the financial responsibility).
  • May manage/supervise a team of up to 5 physiotherapists1 or assistants.

Relationships

  • Internally, interacts with the Hospital project manager, Mobile physiotherapist, the ICRC Al Talh team, the PRP team and Al Talh physiotherapists, doctors and management.
  • Externally, upon request, may interact with local (health) authorities, NGO/UN representatives, professional associations, disabled people's organizations and local partner staff.

Certifications / Education required

  • Degree in physiotherapy (Bachelor's or equivalent with a minimum of 3 years of university studies) or Diploma degree with not less than five years’ experience in physiotherapy .  
  • Valid license to practice in country of residence.
  • Relevant additional degrees (e.g. public health, acute hospital or rehabilitation techniques) an asset.
  • Fluent command of English as well as local language(s).
  • Computer literacy.

Professional Experience required

  • 3-5 years' postgraduate experience and up-to-date knowledge.
  • Teaching experience and skills are strong assets.
  • Experience with INGOs, the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement and/or multicultural or low-resource contexts are strong assets.
