Scope of Work (objectives)  

The objective of the Protection Officer is to effectively integrate and mainstream protection principles within the nutrition programs, ensuring comprehensive and seamless incorporation of protection measures across all stages of program planning, implementation, and evaluation.

This role entails overseeing the implementation of protection strategies to ensure they are efficiently delivered and aligned with the nutrition project objectives. The officer will lead the coordination and maintaining robust engagement with all relevant stakeholders, including the donor, relevant authorities and cluster.

Duration: 1 year, renewable based on performance 

No. of Supervised staff:: 2 

Duty Station: Roving (basically ‘Hodeidah with travel to Raymah)

Main Purpose

The Protection Officer is responsible for ensuring the effective mainstreaming of protection principles within all nutrition program activities. This includes providing technical support to nutrition teams, ensuring protection concerns are identified and addressed, and that staff are equipped to mainstream protection in their daily work. The officer will monitor and evaluate the integration process, ensuring that Standard Operating Procedures and referral systems are effectively applied. By building staff capacity and ensuring close coordination with stakeholders, the Protection Officer will ensure that the nutrition program is protection-sensitive, responsive, and aligned with the project's overall goals. 

Duties and Responsibilities

Mainstreaming of Protection in health & Nutrition Programs

  • Lead the mainstreaming of protection principles and practices within all nutrition program activities, ensuring they are integral to program planning, implementation, and evaluation.
  • Work closely with nutrition program teams to identify protection needs and incorporate appropriate activities into nutrition interventions.

Project Management, Coordination and stakeholders’ engagement:

  • Manage the implementation of protection activities aligned with the nutrition program's goals, monitoring progress, and ensuring compliance with project timelines and objectives.
  • Coordinate with other project managers, stakeholders, and donor to ensure a holistic approach to integrated nutrition and protection services, reporting on project impacts and alignment with the donor objectives.
  • Serve as the primary liaison for protection issues within the nutrition program, engaging with internal teams, external partners, donor, and stakeholders to advocate for protection-mainstreaming approaches.

Capacity Building and Training:

  • Develop and conduct training sessions for project staff and workers on integrating protection measures into their daily activities and interactions with beneficiaries.
  • Enhance staff understanding and skills in identifying, addressing, and referring protection issues encountered within the nutrition program.

Field Operations and Technical Support:

Provide ongoing support and technical advice during field visits, ensuring the effective integration of protection protocols within nutrition services.

Monitor field activities to assess the quality of protection integration and provide feedback and guidance as needed.

Data Management and Reporting:

  • Oversee the collection, analysis, and reporting of data regarding the integration of protection in nutrition programs, ensuring data informs program development and donor reporting.
  • Document best practices and lessons learned in integrating protection with nutrition to guide future program enhancements.

Compliance and Best Practices:

  • Ensure all nutrition and protection activities adhere to relevant legal frameworks, organizational policies, and best practices in humanitarian response.
  • Regularly review and update Standard Operating Procedures to reflect the integrated approach to nutrition and protection.

Community Engagement:

  • Ensure that community feedback mechanisms are in place and that beneficiaries understand how to access protection and nutrition services.

Others:

  • Undertake any other duties as required by the supervisor

Experience and Qualifications and skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in social sciences or any related field.
  • At least 3 years’ experience working in protection activities and emergency humanitarian field .
  • Previous experience working with NGOs/INGOs is highly preferred
  • Fluent in Arabic and English (speaking, reading, writing).
  • Strong knowledge and skills of computer 
  • Show diplomacy, good communication and has good interpersonal skills.
  • able to take initiative and adapt to changing circumstances and priorities able to work to tight deadlines under pressure.
  • Possess multi-cultural flexibility and experience
  • Strong organizational skills and good ability to make proactive suggestions
  • Calm, listen rigorously, able to work under pressure and handle stressful situation
  • Team player, and able to work independently
