About the Position:
The Communications Officer (CO) will be a key member of CIVIC’s Yemen Program and will also support the broader CIVIC Communications Team in its mission to increase the visibility of the organization, and support its advocacy efforts. The CO is a creative initiative-taker who will work closely with the Yemen Country Director, Country Office Program Manager, and CIVIC team In Yemen, juggling a myriad of communications and advocacy needs for the Yemen Program that range from drafting press statements, compelling op-eds on civilian protection, generating social media content, writing and editing blog posts, capturing human-interest stories, and developing and nurturing work relationships with members of the local press and international correspondents. The CO will also have a supporting role in the production of gender inclusive high-quality research publications, advocacy outputs, and assist in the design and launch processes. They will also take a lead role in expanding the Yemen Program’s presence on the web and on social media networks through the launch and regular maintenance of Arabic-language social media pages and a website. The position requires a journalist’s eye for detail, a marketer’s savvy sense of what catches the online audience’s attention, and a fluency of current international issues surrounding conflict and civilians. The CO is expected to play an important role in linking the program interventions at the country level with communications and advocacy efforts at the different levels, including the regional and global levels. The CO reports to the Program Manager and supports, whenever needed, our efforts in achieving gender leadership in our programmatic and technical work. The CO will also serve as the primary focal point with HQ on communication-related topics.
JOB PURPOSE: Support the Yemen Program’s communications needs.
LOCATION: Aden, Yemen.
TRAVEL: As needed throughout Yemen
REPORTING TO: Yemen Country Office Program Manager
KEY FUNCTIONS:
- Draft statements, op-eds, blog posts, social media, press releases, and other communications materials.
- Drafting talking points and messages for the Country Office, and for sharing with spokespersons and communicators at regional and global level.
- Collect information from Program team members and grantees, including field visits, to develop human-interest stories from field, success stories and case studies, including appropriate photographs and video to share with HQ.
- Attend project activity locations and take high-quality photographs and videos for use in both success stories, social media and for M&E purposes (if needed).
- Maintain a database of program videos and photographs.
- Support the design and launch of reports, policy briefs, and marketing materials.
- Develop and manage an Arabic-language website and social media pages, including supporting social media campaigns.
- Assist in managing press lists and distributing relevant content to the appropriate contacts.
- Monitor and measure print, broadcast, and online media mentions and outreach
- Collaborate with the Program team to regularly produce and distribute program status materials like monthly and quarterly reports, snapshots, leaflets and brochures, etc.
- Undertake other special projects and tasks as assigned by the Head of Communications in HQ, CD and PM.
- Other tasks as necessary in agreement with program manager.
QUALIFICATIONS
- BA/BS in Journalism, Communications, Human Rights or a field directly applicable to this role is required.
- Two to three years of experience in international development, communications, or another relevant field.
- Fluency in English and Arabic language is required.
- Top-notch skills in social media and basic Web design. WordPress experience preferred.
- Exceptional verbal/written communication skills, including editing and proofreading. (writing samples required)
- Keen eye for good stories and ability to use media moments to bring attention to the plight of civilians.
- Experience working with the media.
- Fluency with Adobe Creative Suite (primarily Photoshop and Adobe Premiere).
- Demonstrated ability to create multimedia content to render complex topics accessible and relatable to wide audiences.
- Project Management: must be proactive, highly motivated and collaborative. Ability to successfully manage multiple projects and deadlines with varying priorities. aggressive
