In Yemen, JSI has been managing public health programs since 1988, focusing on improving child health and routine immunization, strengthening the supply chain, and improving reproductive, maternal, and newborn health.

Project Overview
The USAID Strengthening Healthcare Access project is a five-year initiative aimed at enhancing access to and equitable utilization of evidence-based maternal, newborn, and child health; nutrition; family planning; and reproductive health (MNCHN/FP/RH) services in Yemen. Led by JSI, the project collaborates with partners to employ a community-led strategy encompassing demand generation, supply-side reinforcement, and enabling environment support. Through engagement with midwives, community reproductive health volunteers, and community structures, the project will create awareness, facilitate access, and enhance care quality. 

Position Description:
The Communications Assistant is a full-time position with the Strengthening Health Access project. The post-holder will support the project communications team, and report to the Communications Manager, with documentation and knowledge management of project activities, in addition to gathering content, such as testimonies from the project’s beneficiaries and trainees. The Communications Assistant will be based in the Aden office with frequent travel to project-supported locations in Ta’izz, Hadramout and Lahj governorates, and other areas as needed.

 Duties & Responsibilities:
Under the supervision of the Communications Manager, and with close collaboration and coordination with the Communications and Graphic Design Officer and the program team, the Communications Assistant is responsible for:

●      Documentation of project activities (photography and videography):

o   Document the project’s events, workshops, and field activities through photography and videography, and gather testimonies and interviews when needed.

o   Organize and archive all photo and video content and transcribe interviews/testimonies from events and field activities for future use by the communications team for reporting, social media posts, and other strategic communications products.

o   Assist in organizing the third-party photography and videography field trips.

●      Knowledge management:

o   Manage and maintain the project’s photo and video libraries, strategic information plan, communications/SBC products, and program-related documents (such as research, guidelines, and IEC materials) in cloud storage. This will support the Communications Manager in facilitating knowledge sharing within the project and with the donor by organizing and managing a unified, easily accessible storage of resources, data, and documents.

●      Assist in accurately executing the project’s Branding Strategy and Marking Plan, and content development when needed. 

●      Provide communications support during events, workshops, trainings and conferences.

●      Administrative support:

o   Assist with administrative tasks related to the communications department, such as submitting of operational and finance-related documents and coordinating with sub partners, when needed. 

o   Ensure accurate records of communication activities, events, and communications-related contacts are maintained.

●      Follow and support all policies and requirements related to staff safety and security; 

●      Uphold JSI’s policies around accountability, fraud/ethics management, child safeguarding, and protection from sexual exploitation and abuse; 

●      Any additional responsibilities, as assigned. 

 

Qualifications:

●      Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, or a related field;

●      At least 1 year of professional communications experience in a similar setting.

●      Previous experience with communications work in NGOs preferred;

●      Strong photography and videography skills. Experience in event photography/videography and graphic design is a strong asset.

●      Strong organizational and documentation skills.

●      Very good written and spoken English is required. Must be able to read and interpret documents, and communicate with others as necessary to perform job duties effectively;

●      Proactive, with a strong ability to take initiative.

●      Ability to work under pressure and manage personal stress levels;

●      Familiarity working with the Google Suite of projects (Gmail, Drive, Sheets, etc.) preferred;

●      Willingness and ability to travel to project sites in the project-supported governorates with overnight stays.
